Villagers unite against proposed dumpyard

The proposed dumpyard at Lakdaram in Patancheru mandal here has kicked off a controversy with villagers registering their opposition at the Collectorate on Monday.
The government has proposed to establish a dumpyard in Lakdaram village for disposing of garbage being generated in Hyderabad. The village has already been facing pollution woes with huge crushing units operating there; the fine dust emanating out of the crushers form a blanket on the grass making it impossible for animals to consume fodder. Despite repeated appeals from the village to trash the dumpyard proposal, there was allegedly no response from the administration.
Recently, the proposal came up for discussion at the general body meeting of the Zilla Parishad and members like G. Srikantha Goud opposed the idea stating that they were not ready to accept the garbage from other places.
The villagers held a dharna outside the Collectorate and later submitted a memorandum to Collector Vasam Venkateswarlu. When the Collector explained that modern technology will be used in establishing the garbage collection unit, the villagers responded saying that they had very bad experiences with pollution control technologies and do not want any garbage collection unit in their village.
Krishna Goud, a resident of Lakdaram, said as much as 400 acres had been acquired by the government for the construction of Rajiv Swagruha housing in the village but the land was not used so far. Informing that farmers have been cultivating the land since 1970, efforts to take back the land for a dumpyard is not right, he said.
“We will bar entry of all vehicles into the village and also move the court,” warned Raji Reddy, former sarpanch of the village.
